Relocating to Houston: Choosing a Neighborhood

Aug 20, 2026

Start With Your Commute

Houston is spread out, and traffic can add up. Start by mapping the drive from candidate neighborhoods to your workplace at the times you will actually travel. Living a few miles closer can save a lot of time.

Think About Lifestyle

  • Walkable and urban: Midtown, Montrose, the Heights, and Uptown offer restaurants, shops, and nightlife nearby.
  • Established and leafy: Memorial, Bellaire, and West University offer mature trees and strong demand.
  • Family friendly suburbs: Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Pearland, and Cypress offer newer homes, parks, and well regarded school districts.

Compare Total Cost

Housing prices, property taxes, MUD or HOA fees, and insurance vary by area. Texas has no state income tax, but compare the full cost of living, not just the price of the house.

Check Flood and Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane season runs from June through November. Ask about flood history, drainage, and insurance for any home you are considering.

Visit Before You Decide

If you can, spend a weekend touring neighborhoods. If you cannot, we offer video tours and can send you a shortlist before you arrive.
